Historic Viking Ship to sail in Port Philip Bay
Mornington, Victoria, History will be made this Saturday 7th January, when Asbjorn Pedersen, Mornington-based Viking descendent, launches his hand-built Viking Ship replica into the waters at Mornington Pier.
In construction, since 2018, in a Hasting custom-built shed, the boat named “Mjolner” the identical replica of an original Viking Ship, Skuldelve 3 (cargo ship from A.D. 1030) that was recovered in 1962 and has since been on display in a Danish Viking Ship Museum.

Pedersen is an avid Viking fan, and descendant from Denmark, near Jomsborg, where legend has it resided JomsVikings, notorious for being very brutal and skilled fighters. Building the ship by hand in Hastings under the guidance of authentic Danish boatmakers, Pedersen spent years painstakingly constructing the ship, with precision and attention to detail.

Mjolner, will be berthed at Martha Cove, and is bound to attract Viking fans and history buffs as it sails around the bay. The ship will be available for commercial joy rides in a few months, providing the full Viking experience, with a crew of 6 Vikings, from the re-enactment group “The Joms Vikings”.
“This is a little part of history – It has been lots of work, but a labour of love.”, says Pedersen.
